I do a lot of interview shoots and I like the portability and results from my Canon 5D MKII but as a professional I need levels and a way to monitor the audio. This makes that all possible and the quality is amazing. I have used Beachteck products in the past and this one is in the right place at the right time

3.0 out of 5 stars Great to monitor audio, but cheap, plastic build, January 27, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: BeachTek DXA-5Da Passive Dual XLR Audio Adapter for DSLR Camcorders with Mic Jack (Electronics)
Let me start off by saying it's amazing to be able to monitor your audio on your Canon 7D. For a few years I've been relying on my Rode Video Mic and on occasion it's been switched off by mistake without me knowing. I also can't stand to sync audio from my Zoom H4n using my lavs (even with Plural Eyes), so this is beautiful. It's the cheap plastic box that gets me. It looks great mounted below my 7D, but it makes the camera completely shaky and unstable when mounted on my 504HD/536 Manfrotto combo tripod. I also tried it on my shoulder mount with my follow focus, but every time I turned the focus dial, the camera would bend up and down making my shots useless. I really like the functionality of the circuitry itself, but have to give it three stars for not being in a metal enclosure.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice Form - Poorly Built, August 7, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: BeachTek DXA-5Da Passive Dual XLR Audio Adapter for DSLR Camcorders with Mic Jack (Electronics)
I ordered the BeachTek DXA-5Da, and upon its arrival, I immediately decided to return it. The casing is a cheap plastic; much cheaper than I expected. For example, the 9 volt battery cover has a very cheap cover and clip that would wear out very quickly. After opening it just one time, I knew that it will never hold up to daily production use. It's a rigid plastic tab built similarly to a TV remote battery cover... and we've ALL had to tape one of those closed... just imagine having to replace the 9 volt battery every few hours, and dealing with that. No, thanks... I'll pass.

If you're going to spend the money for this, do yourself a favor and spend the extra $20 and get the BeachTek DXA-SLR with phantom power, and metal body.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing camera - D800 replacement?, May 8, 2012
By
Waikiki (Honolulu, Hi) - See all my reviews
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
Like many folks, I pre-ordered the D800 the same day it was available. Alas, Nikon totally blew the market analysis vs production vs. supply chain formula. After waiting 2 months, I had to leave the country before Nikon got it's D800 act together. I needed a beat-up D90 replacement camera, and the D3200 seemed like a decent place-holder. I quickly ordered one before they were back-ordered too! Sure, the D3200 is DX, not FX. Sure, it is not nearly as flexible. Sure, it can only AF with newer lenses. BUT, you can buy about 4-D3200's for the price of a D800, AND it comes with a decent kit lens for $699!

The tutoring graphical-based menu system is geared more to beginners, which I am not, so I find it maddening. Most will love it, since it is somewhat educational, and offers a great variety of pre-sets to take creative shots easily.
It is amazingly light weight - lighter than most lenses! It is very quiet. The AF could be faster, but it's plenty fast enough. When... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Baby D800 ??, May 12, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
I had no plans to buy this camera, but eventually had to find a solution while waiting for my D800 to be delivered. I kind of felt, I could get some training by shooting high megapixel images on this entry level camera.

My first outing after the camera arrived was to some birdpark with absolutely no prior preparation. The manual is still in the box, only charged the battery overnight and brought a selection of lenses in addition to the kit lens.

First surprise, even the kit "plastic" lens performs really nicely on this camera. Due to the nature of the objects of interest, the remaining shoots were done on a 28-300mm.

I was accompanied by an experienced bird photographer and we took turns with the camera. Both made the following observations: From the angle of experienced Nikon users, this camera offers everything in terms of menus and dials to set the camera up the way one is used to from D90, D7000, D300s level cameras. This came as a surprise, as the... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid performer for the price., May 10, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
I only really purchased this as a studio cam. Don't need AF performance for that, nor high ISO's, but do need great resolution. So, with trepidation and reserve, I decided to try this one. I am coming from D700's, D3's, D7k's and other as my point of reference. I shoot for a living.

The good:

Resolution is excellent, especially when coupled with the 40mm macro from Nikon. I have shot a few hundred shots now and am very happy in that regard. The menus are simple enough that you can work them out if you already know Nikon's systems for menus. AF performance is great for this kind of body. Using my 17-55 with it, I could acquire focus only slightly slower that with the D7000. I tried in lower light to see how that worked, and while you could tell it was slower, it was not too bad. Every shot I have taken bar one (black dog in a dark room), was in focus as intended. So, AF is good for this kind of body. I like the layout of the controls too, everything was where it... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Great photo backpack for day hikes or regular use, January 3, 2012
This review is from: DAKINE Sequence Pack
I am a advanced amateur/semi-pro photographer and a total gear maniac. I purchased the Dakine Sequence backpack about 4 years ago before my first trip to the Tetons and Yellowstone. I was taking a ton of gear (large SLR, four lenses, two flashes, batteries, chargers, remote triggers, monopod, tripod, cleaning gear, memory cards, and more) and my wife and I planned on hiking quite a bit. My gear was going to weigh in at 10-30 pounds depending upon what I brought with me on any given hike so I needed a bag that could handle that kind of weight and not destroy my back. This bag was more than up to the task. On the flight out to Colorado I even managed to squeeze my laptop into the rear compartment! I was very impressed during my trip with the comfort of the bag even while hiking 5 to 10 miles a day. It has enough room to fit all of my gear, strap my mono or tripod to the rear/sides, and have enough extra room for snacks, water and other day trip essentials. There's even a small... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Great pack, functional, practical, comfortable., January 3, 2012

This review is from: DAKINE Sequence Pack
I have had my Dakine Sequence pack for 2 years now and although I spent some cash getting two other photopacks (one for skiing and one with a hydration reservoir) I have switched back to using the trusty Dakine Sequence pack. The inner compartment for holding your optics is very nice and the best part is that you can remove it quickly, with all your lens and camera bodies still in it. This is useful for traveling and other situations where you want to secure your gear, yet have it ready to go out into the field quickly. I put my inner compartment into a safe when I am not using it, for example. The pack holds my Canon 7D, EF 300mm f/4 and EF 400 f/5.6 lens easily, along with room for an extender and wide angle lens and separate Canon T2i body. It can also hold a jacket and lunch for the day, although most of the real estate is guided towards camera gear. It does come with an hydration bladder system, so you have to carry your water in a water bottle (which can fit easily in the... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Quality With Great Features!, May 18, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: DAKINE Sequence Pack (Sports)
I spent alot of time researching camera bags (over 2 months!!) and finally made the decision to get the Dakine Sequence. I have had this bag for just over 2 weeks now and I am very pleased with it. It has the expected quality that you receive from Dakine which is nothing but the best and it holds alot of gear! When I say alot I really do mean alot! I have plenty of room in it as I am just starting to build up my equipment but judging from looking at it I would say you could fit a gripped full frame dslr with 70-200 attatched and then still have room for a 1.6x crop dslr and 2 more lenses plus any other little things you would need. It has a padded laptop compartment which perfectly fits the Toshiba 15 inch laptop I use and it has a bunch of other little pockets for anything else you would need such as lunch, water bottle, extra batteries, etc. Even when the camera pack was full I was still able to fit in enough clothes for an overnight stay. The zippers are very heavy duty and... Read more
